What to have ready when you call
You do not need any of this to ring us. It just makes the first call more useful.
- What he is taking, and roughly how long it has been going on.
- Whether he has been admitted anywhere before, and for how long.
- Whether there have been fits, blackouts or any other medical problem.
- Whether he knows you are calling.
- Any medicines he is already on.
Nothing you say on that call goes anywhere else.
If he does not want to come
Say so on the phone. It is the most common situation we deal with, not the unusual one, and there is no point starting the conversation by pretending otherwise. We have been doing this since 2017 and we will tell you what has worked for other families in the same position.
Before you bring him
Please call first. Admission can be done at any hour of the day or night, but ringing ahead means a bed is made and the doctor knows you are coming. Turning up unannounced just means waiting.
If this is a medical emergency, such as a seizure, unconsciousness or an overdose, take the person to the nearest hospital casualty first or call 108. Ring us afterwards.
Visiting the centre
Families are welcome to come and see the centre before admitting anyone. Walk through the rooms, the counselling hall, the kitchen and the ground. Meet the staff. Call before you set out so that somebody is free to show you around.
