Medicine and capsule addiction treatment
ਗੋਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਕੈਪਸੂਲ
This is the quiet one. No smell, no foil, no needles. Just a strip of tablets that started with a prescription and never stopped.
Tablets, capsules, cough syrup, injections from the chemist. Aasra is a government approved de-addiction and rehabilitation centre at Korewala Road, Daroli Bhai, Moga, running since 2017. Own consultant psychiatrist, 50 beds, staff on duty at every hour. Admission can be done at any time of the day or night. Call +91 83601 40700.
How it usually starts
A back injury and a painkiller. Sleeplessness and a sleeping tablet. Anxiety and something to calm the nerves. It was prescribed, it worked, and then it kept being bought without anybody prescribing it again.
In this belt it is also very common for somebody trying to come off chitta or doda to substitute chemist medicines, and end up dependent on those instead.
Why this one needs care
Some of these medicines are genuinely dangerous to stop suddenly. Sleep and anxiety tablets of the benzodiazepine family can cause seizures on abrupt withdrawal, in the same way alcohol can.
The dose has to be reduced in a planned way under a doctor. Please do not simply take the strips away and hope for the best, and please do not let anybody at a centre with no doctor manage this.
The other problem underneath
Almost always there is a reason the medicine was needed in the first place. Pain that was never properly treated, anxiety, depression, or insomnia going back years.
Stopping the tablets without treating that will not hold. Our psychiatrist looks at the whole picture and treats the underlying condition properly, which usually means the person no longer needs to self medicate.
How it is treated here
A planned reduction rather than a sudden stop, with monitoring for withdrawal.
Bring every strip, bottle and prescription with you. Not an approximate list, the actual medicines. The detox plan depends entirely on what he has been taking and how much.
Then the same residential programme, with counselling on how to manage pain, sleep and anxiety without going back to the chemist.
Before you call
It helps if you know roughly how long it has been going on, how much he is taking, whether he has been admitted anywhere before, and whether there have been fits or blackouts. Bring any medicines and reports with you. None of it is essential. Ring us either way.
Nothing you tell us goes anywhere else. No name and no photograph leaves this centre without written permission from the family.
In an emergency, such as a seizure, unconsciousness, a suspected overdose or talk of suicide, go to the nearest hospital casualty or call 108 first. Ring us afterwards. See our medical disclaimer.
Where this information comes from
This page is written at the centre and checked by our consultant psychiatrist before it goes up. Where we describe how a drug behaves or how withdrawal works, we follow published guidance from bodies such as the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS, and the World Health Organization. You can read our editorial policy.
